Julio Iglesias, Gold Medal for Merit in the Fine Arts

The Spanish Government has awarded today the Gold Medals for Merit in the Fine Arts to 25 people or organizations who have excelled in 2009 in the field of artistic and cultural creation, including personalities as diverse as the Duchess of Alba, Julio Iglesias and Tricicle.

These awards, as reported by the Council of Ministers following their meeting, honor people and organizations who have provided "outstanding service in the promotion, development, and dissemination " of art and culture or in the conservation of artistic heritage.

The Government wanted to honor the singer and composer Julio Iglesias (Madrid, 1943), for being the Latin singer "who has sold the most albums worldwide in the Spanish language, and one of the top ten artists who have sold the most albums in the history of music".
