Q&A With Julio Iglesias- From St. Louis Magazine

This may be the first Q&A I’ve run that really needs no introduction--but I'm going to give one anyway, just beause the numbers are so impressive: Julio Iglesias has released 77 albums in 14 languages, which have sold more than 300 million copies. He is one of the top 10 best selling music artists in history, and has performed something to the tune of 5,000 concerts. Iglesias adds to that number tonight, December 4, when he performs at Powell Hall, singing songs from his considerable catalog of hits, including "All the Girls I've Loved Before," “Nathalie,” and “Ae, Ao,” as well pieces as from his latest albums, Romantic Classics (his first English album in over 10 years), and Quelques Choses De France. The starts at concert 8 p.m., and tickets are $45–$135. Buy 'em straight from the box office by calling 314-534-1700.

Mr. Iglesias was kind enough to take time out for an interview with us in anticipation of tonight's concert. Here is his charming take on why he loves to perform live, what keeps him touring, and what he likes about St. Louis. --Stefene Russell

SLM: So, you’re going to be performing in St. Louis for one night, and I wanted to talk first about that show, that concert, and give people a little preview.

JI: Well, that’s a good question (laughs). I would love to know too. (Laughs.) No, I’m singing for two generations, from Finland to China, and I didn’t lose my passion for singing, so that is why I have been singing for the past month, all over the world. So, I’m just living through the music with the passion that I have when I start to sing. Nothing has changed in my life except that I have 30, 40 years, no? I was a baby. And now I’m babysitting (laughs).

SLM: Yep, I saw on your website that you have some new little ones …

JI: That’s right, little babies.

SLM: I also saw on your site that you have a new album, and it’s your first album in English for quite a while.

JI: I had to get back to the studio, yes. By the way, I will be back in the studio when I finish in Korea in April, so I will start the album in May.

SLM: And actually you’ve got two albums out recently, Romantic Classics and Quelques Chose de France…

JI: Sorry, do you speak a little bit of French? It’s not easy to say Quelques Chose de France, en francais. (Laughs.)

SLM: Ah, well, just a little. I’d be afraid to go there, because it’s been so long since I’ve spoken it—even though St. Louis is technically a French city…! So, I’ve got this list of some of the songs you may be performing on December 4, including “All the Girls I’ve Loved Before,” which is sort of your signature piece, the song people associate with you.

JI: (Laughs.) Yes, yes. I will sing the classics for sure. When you have a long career, you have to sing the songs that the people want to hear. And that’s absolutely a priority for an artist. I will sing whatever the people want me to sing. For me to perform is a communion between the audience and myself. I don’t go to play for me. I go to enjoy myself with the people, it’s like to pass the passion and emotion to the people. To sing is very easy. To sing is just … a quality of techniques that you have because you have been performing for four generations. But to perform, to entertain, to impassionate the people, it is completely different.

SLM: It’s a different kind of gratification, I guess?

JI: Well, gratification, I am 60 years old, maybe a little more, and I look like 35 years old when I go on the stage, because my blood runs so strong and so powerful, that I pretend to be a young kid on the stage. (Laughs.)

SLM: Well, that’s why you’re still at it, I guess—

JI: That’s exactly it! Because believe me, it’s not a question of money in my life. I love to play for the people who come to see me.

SLM: Now, some of these song from the 60s, 70s and 80s that are on Romantic Classics.

JI: Well, for example, some of the songs that I’m playing, from years ago, songs I did with Diana Ross (“All of You”) or with Willie (“All the Girls I’ve Loved Before”), of course I had to sing “I Want to Know What Love Is,” and other songs that I have been playing for generation. The concept was an Anglo-Saxon/Spanish concert. (Laughs.)

SLM: I also saw this note that the orchestra is not performing with you, so you’re bringing a band with you?

JI: Yeah, we bring a lot of people. Unfortunately we come from a long, long, tour, and to prepare an orchestra concert is very difficult when you are in a tour that started last year and it will finish in April. It’s not like I play the same way every day, no. But it has a book of music and techniques which is … well, a nightmare to just prepare a concert with orchestra. But I have done this many, many times by the way. And I would love to play with the St. Louis Orchestra. And I have time, I’m a little baby, I can do that!

SLM: So you’ll back and do that, maybe?

JI: I’ll come back, I’ve played St. Louis many times, and it is always a pleasure to come back. That is the biggest compliment in the life of an artist, when they give you the opportunity to come back to a place.

SLM: When were you here last? JI: The first time was 30 years ago. I played last time at the Fox Theatre, which is a beauty, by the way. And I’ve played many times in St. Louis, and I love it. I love to visit the city. I don’t pass through there like a ghost, no, no, no. I can see St. Louis with my eyes right now, I know exactly the city, it has a contemporary Francophone ancestral culture, you know what I mean? And I like it very much. It’s easy for me, I am flying my own plane, so I have time to spend and leave whenever I want. It’s good for me to visit the places. I also will be in St. Louis the 3rd, because I don’t play the 2nd, and it will be until the 5th in the afternoon. I will go to a good restaurant for sure, and I will enjoy the city, and pass through, and I will walk a little bit. That is what I do normally.

SLM: So you had mentioned the album you’re going to record next year, and I wanted to ask about the concept behind it.

JI: You know, until I start, I don’t know exactly. I will go through ideas in the next six months with my producer, so I don’t know exactly it will be like this and like this and like this—I will just for the time being now, understand what exactly what I can release and people will accept. This is something also very much related with the people. When you want to do something, you also want the people to like it, not to tell the people you are doing is OK.

SLM: I guess that is a matter of maybe feeling, when you’re performing, what songs people tend to respond to?

JI: Yes, of course, if there is no feeling for the music, don’t do it. It has to have something inside, something that is attractive, for you, too. The passion of the life of an artist—if there is no passion there, it doesn’t feel like anything.

SLM: So if you had three or four songs you’d love to do someday, maybe not for this album neccesarily, what would they be?

JI: When you go to that class of music that is already made for another artist, you have to be very careful. Like Nat King Cole, or any major artist, when they sing their songs, it is a masterpiece, you cannot do anything to it, because it’s already there. So you have to be careful. There is also another class of songs, it is a music that is sometimes a great song, but the artist doesn’t have a big faith, because they did only one song, it doesn’t have the character of the artist. So that kind of music you can take and think about, but it’s not so easy sometimes. Writing, you have to write songs in the language that is your maternal language. And that is not so easy. But I will try to do an album that at least my kids love! (Laughs.)

SLM: That’s right, your son [Enrique Iglesias], is performing now, too…

JI: Exactly! I have a son who performs very well, by the way.

SLM: It’s almost like you’re starting a dynasty.

JI: I don’t know about a dynasty! That might be too much. But my children are successful in many things.

Article from the St. Louis Newspaper

By Daniel Durchholz
SPECIAL TO THE POST-DISPATCH
12/04/2009

Julio Iglesias can't have much to prove at this point. Over a career spanning 40 years, he's sold more than 300 million copies of the nearly 80 albums he's released in 14 languages. Among the world's most famous singers, he is regularly ushered in to meet heads of state and royalty in the countries he visits.

So at 66 years of age, with eight children and four homes to occupy his time, what keeps the Spanish singer going? "I'm an artist who goes on the stage and the passion is there," Iglesias said in a recent phone interview. "I can't survive without singing. Physically, maybe, but psychologically, no, if I would not be on the stage. The stage for me is a way to accelerate my blood and my brains and become a completely new person every day."Among Iglesias' many hits, some of which he'll perform tonight at Powell Hall, are "El Amor," "De Nina a Mujer," "Manuela," "Me Olvide de Vivir" and his English language breakthrough, "To All the Girls I've Loved Before," a duet with Willie Nelson.

"That was a lucky time in my life," Iglesias said about recording with Nelson. "I never expected the success we had. And he helped me so much, because he's a very generous person. I really appreciated very much that he gave me the time to learn the song, to learn the language. It was one of the first times that I sang a song in English. After that, the way in America was a little less difficult." Iglesias parlayed that hit into other genre-breaking duets with Stevie Wonder, Sting, Frank Sinatra and Diana Ross. "I learned from them … everything," he said.

With all the travel in his life lately, Iglesias hasn't taken the time to record a new English language album since "Romantic Classics" in 2006. He admits that part of the delay is hesitation over finding the right material. "It's not easy after 40 years to really choose the right thing," he said. "You get very confused. Now it's even more difficult." For a song to be right for him, Iglesias said, he needs to be jealous that he didn't write it himself. "It has to be something that I really mean when I sing," he said. "It has to be a song that goes to my brain and my heart. And sometimes I'm wrong. Many times I'm wrong."

A new album may come when he's done touring. But for now, Iglesias is too busy thinking about things in his immediate future."I think that when you establish an achievement, you should also try to dream a little," he said. "I find that if I stop thinking about the future, I live in the past. The past is beautiful — I sold records, I've been all over the world. "But the idea to do something new, it makes my commitment — with my music, with the people, with my passion for life — new every day."

Merrillville, IN- CANCELLED

JULIO IGLESIAS CANCELS STAR PLAZA CONCERT

Singer Julio Iglesias has cancelled his weekend concert scheduled for 7 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 6.

Star Plaza Theatre Publicist Monica Montella Helm announced the cancellation late Tuesday, explaining the reason was: "Due to an issue regarding the documentation of international musicians."

She said refunds for tickets, which were $45, will be made to ticketholders at the place of purchase.

The engagement was just one stop on the 66-year-old singer's new world tour celebrating his 40-year career.

In just the past few months, Iglesias has previously sold-out shows in Russia, Italy and New York.

Following his Merrillville engagement, Iglesias told The Times in an telephone interview his tour was scheduled for dates in Australia and New Zealand.

The first time Iglesias ever performed at Star Plaza Theatre was in 1987, along with later dates in 1993 and 1995.

Iglesias still has passion on stage

Iglesias still has passion on stage

BY IAN SPELLING
The Record

"Passion," Julio Iglesias says. "It's all about passion. I still have a passion for what I do, for singing, for entertaining. I love it, and I am honored that people still have a passion for listening to me."

Iglesias, it should be noted, is one of the world's most famous, most successful and most enduring artists and performers. To put the Spaniard's career in some perspective, he has released nearly 80 albums in 14 different languages and sold more than 300 million copies of those albums across the globe. At 66 years old, with homes in Miami, the Dominican Republic and Spain and with eight children, Iglesias surely doesn't need to keep working — or maybe he does, come to think of it — but there's just no stopping him.

He's on the road again and making an East Coast swing that will bring him to Englewood on Sunday. Celebrating his 40th anniversary in the business, Iglesias — who'll no doubt be decked out in his trademark black suit, vest and tie — will croon songs from a long list of English- and Spanish-language hits that includes "Mi Amor," "Can't Help Falling in Love," "De Nina a Mujer," "Me Olvide de Vivir," "All of You" and "To All the Girls I've Loved Before."

"It's an honor to return to the same cities, to the same [venues], because that means people still care, are still interested," Iglesias says, speaking by telephone from his Miami home on a rare day off, his voice and charm as silky-smooth as ever. "My blood runs at a different speed when I am with the people, with the public.

"All of the privileges I have in my life are because of the public. They give me those privileges. They understand my passion, and I understand that without singing I would be dead, psychically and physically. Passion is maybe the most beautiful feeling human beings can have. It is more than emotion."

Fans waiting for new material from Iglesias may find themselves waiting a long while. His most recent album, "Romantic Classics," was released in 2006, and Iglesias is in absolutely no rush to head back into a recording studio.

"People ask me every day, more and more, and the thing is, I don't know," he says. "I am going to be around the world in the next several months. Let me see, I will be in the United States through December and then in Australia, China, Japan, all of Asia, in February and March and April. So I don't know when I will get back to the studio.

"I don't feel like going to the studio now. I don't know what to do in the studio. To do an album you have to put your brain and your heart together for six months, completely, and I don't feel like that now. I feel it is time for me to go on the stage, to play all around the world. I love to play on the stage more and more."

Julio Iglesias brings four decades of music to Pechanga

By: SCOTT MCDONALD - For The Californian -
Posted: Wednesday, November 18, 2009 5:00 pm

Just last year, music legend Julio Iglesias celebrated forty years as a singer and songwriter. In that time, he's continuously traveled the world, performed more than 5,000 concerts, and sold over 300 million records. However, it took a car accident that left him bedridden for months to lead him down a musical path.

Iglesias, the eldest of two sons born to Spain's most famous gynecologist, initially had his sights set on a professional soccer career ---- even playing for a time as goalie on Real Madrid's youth team.

Told by doctors after the accident that he would never walk again, Iglesias took up guitar to keep his hands occupied and his mind distracted. And even after he had beat the odds and fully recovered, Iglesias studied at Cambridge University where he earned a law degree.

But a path other than music was not to be. In 1968, he won a Spanish songwriting contest and the rest is history.

Yet Iglesias doesn't give his current milestone much credence.

"It's nothing really," he said recently after arriving in Miami on the heels of a handful of dates in the Dominican Republic. "There are people out there who have been working much more than I have and they deserve more than me. But I am very grateful for it all. I love that I can still go anywhere and they still like the music."

That's putting it mildly. Iglesias performs over a hundred shows a year across the globe and the fans love the music. "Romantic Classics," Iglesias' 2006 English-language offering, was his highest debut ever on the Billboard charts in the U.S., Canada, Australia, Europe, and Asia ---- a significant feat given the fact that he's released nearly 80 albums in 14 languages.

"It's amazing," he said. "I feel very lucky. And I love that I've always been able to play everywhere from Finland to China. And when I go to different countries, I not only sing in the different languages, but I make love in them as well."

Iglesias has kept a keen sense of humor throughout his career and chuckles heartily after half of the things he says. While he has a generally affable personality, the crooner attributes much of his jovial nature to the fun he finds in the day-to-day happenings of his extended family. Iglesias had three children in the 70s, including international recording artist son Enrique, and started another family in the late 90s with current wife Miranda. The couple has three sons and twin girls.

The singer's father also started a second family later in life, fathering two children shortly before he passed in 2005. The Grammy Award winner now has a 5-year-old half-brother and a three-year-old half sister.

"Family in my life is great," Iglesias said. "I have a baby that's two years old. It's wonderful. I could really be his grandfather, but it's OK. To have a baby is a beautiful thing. And it's also good because it's made me very patient. It's a very special situation that I have."

Iglesias continues to draw inspiration from both his extended family and fans all over the world. He'll close out 2009 with a run of American dates ---- including a stop tonight at Pechanga Resort's showroom in Temecula ---- on a tour that has already taken him to Mexico, Uruguay, Brazil, Chile, Lebanon, Canada, Turkey, Spain, Bolivia, Israel, and the Dominican Republic this year. Not one to slow down too much, he has more of the same planned for next year. And while Iglesias' popularity shows no signs of diminishing, the best-selling singer likes to keep his focus on the simpler things.

"Just to wake up every day is an honor," he said. "I think tomorrow is much more important that yesterday. And it will be always be that way. For me, the only business I have in my life is to be alive. And that's a great business."

Julio in the Dominican Republic

Article from: julioiglesias.com

Julio Iglesias has his friend Oscar de la Renta sing with him in the Dominican Republic

There are occasions when a performance surprises, and that is what happened today in Santo Domingo, where the Spanish singer Julio Iglesias succeeded in persuading his friend, the Dominican designer Oscar de la Renta, to come up on stage and sing with him.

The Spanish singer Julio Iglesias performs a concert in the Santo Domingo Sports Palace, during his world tour "Julio Iglesias in Concert," to celebrate his forty-year career. EFE

"You may not imagine it, but he is, from Finland to China, the most important ambassador of the Dominican Republic," declared the Spanish singer to an audience eager to find out to whom he was referring. With these words he introduced de la Renta, who tentatively sang, along with the friendly laughter of Iglesias because of the way he was singing, the song "To All the Girls I've Loved Before".

It was one of the most enjoyable moments for an audience pleasantly surprised by the Madrid star's performance, in which he also sang "Quijote" together with the local idol, Fernando Villalona, who was the opening act of the show. "I cannot leave the Dominican Republic without singing with Fernando. I think that Fernando and Juan Luis (he said in reference to Juan Luis Guerra) are two of the masters in the history of the music of their country".

And from this moment erupted the wild enthusiasm of the audience, who gave at least five standing ovations to thank the star of the evening with their applause for the gift of a performance, filled with allusions to the Caribbean country, in whose east coast, in Punta Cana, Iglesias resides during much of the year.

And it's that the singer demonstrated, two and a half years after his last performance in Altos de Chavon, as his popular song states, "la vida sigue igual," because, the same as in previous occasions, he had the audience of about eight thousand, who completely filled the Santo Domingo Sports Palace, eating out of his hand. This is the first of the two Dominican performances on his tour, which will be completed in this country with another performance next Saturday in the Cibao Arena complex, in Santiago (north).

"It's a day of nervousness. Always when I am at home I have this slight anxiety. Thank you for so many years, for so much affection," he said at one moment, and added later that the Dominican Republic "is a country of love".

Dressed in his usual dark suit, vest and tie, the singer of "Me olvidé de vivir" said also that his father instilled in him a love for this West Indian country, telling him that "in the Dominican Republic love has no age." "I fell in love with your country; these are not just words, but also actions," revealed the singer, who affirmed that, although he was born in Spain, of an Andalusian mother and a Galician father, he feels Dominican.

It was a little more than two hours in which, accompanied by guitar, bass, saxophone, percussion, keyboard and drums, the artist performed some 35 songs.

Among all of them stood out "Hey," with which Julio Iglesias, in an emotional interpretation, received the strongest applause of the audience in a standing ovation.

Get ready to feel the romance

Posted By SARA ROSS, THE PACKET AND TIMES- Orillia, Ontario Canada

Julio Iglesias hopes to put people in the mood while serenading his fans at Casino Rama later this month.

"They have a good time, (then) they go back home and they maybe make love -- you never know," the 66-year-old laughed. "I love that. The more the better."

Casino Rama is Iglesias' third and last Canadian stop on his 2009 Julio Iglesias in Concert world tour. He performed in Coquitlam and Richmond B. C., in May. The year-long tour started in January with 57 scheduled performances.

"I tour because I need to tour," Iglesias said. "I have the passion to sing all my life. It's not for money. It's just a passion. I just need to. Music is my life."

When Iglesias takes to the Casino Rama stage on Oct. 30 and 31, he will perform classic songs such as Manuela, Quijote, Me olvidé de vivir, Hey!,and El Amor.

"I don't have a repertoire. It means I can change the pace for the country, but normally I would play the classics and newer stuff, but normally the classics," he said. "They will hear whatever they want to hear."

Iglesias spoke to The Packet & Times from his recording studio in the Caribbean and shared few insights into the material he is working on now. "I don't know exactly what I'll do," Iglesias said. "It's great because it's something that will be created from the moment that I'm living."

Iglesias, who was born in Madrid, has recorded 77 albums, selling more than 300 million copies in 14 languages.

In 1983, Iglesias was awarded the first and only Diamond Record Award ever given to a performer by the Guinness World Book of Records for selling more records in more languages than any other musical artist in history -- Spanish, German, Japanese, English, Italian, Portuguese, French and Tagalog. Last year, he celebrated four decades of his musical career.

Iglesias has played at Casino Rama several times in the past and is thrilled to come back, he said.
"I love to come back to places because there is no bigger privilege in life then to come back to a place," Iglesias said. "I love (Casino Rama). I think it has great sound. There's great people. It's great, great, great."

Tickets for the show can be purchased online at
www.ticketmaster.ca or in person at the Casino Rama box office.

"Without any doubt Julio Iglesias represents the most important Dominican ambassador on a planetary level," claimed the official in the ceremony celebrated in the Council Palace of the Colonial City of Santo Domingo.Salcedo affirmed that for his country "it is a mark of distinction to know that this man (Iglesias), who many years ago visited the Dominican Republic for the first time, has remained in the hearts and the thoughts of the Dominican people".

Iglesias, who resides a good part of the year in Punta Cana (on the east coast of the Republic), gave his thanks for the honor and declared himself "enamored" of this nation, which he first got to know, he said, through his late father, who also "loved" it.The Dominican Republic is, in his opinion, "an absolutely perfect country, even still to be discovered," which will receive millions of visitors in the coming years. The singer assured that in the Dominican Republic, a country that he has known for 40 years, one has a "very enjoyable time"."Here I have my family, my people and my friends," emphasized the singer of the hits "Un canto a Galicia" and "Me olvidé de vivir."

Julio Iglesias is celebrating at this time his forty-year career in music with a world tour which will land in the Dominican Republic for two concerts, the 5th and 7th of this coming November.

The singer of "33 años" and "De niña a mujer," among other numerous hits, has recorded songs in 14 languages and has sold more than 300 million albums. It is estimated that he has performed more than 5,000 concerts in more than 600 cities around the world.

Julio Iglesias charms Tel Aviv

World-famous Spanish balladeer Julio Iglesias performed the first of two concerts at the Nokia Arena in Tel Aviv, Tuesday night. The show was the singer's first in Israel since 1998.

Iglesias, 65, dressed in his trademark sleek black suit, vest and tie, passionately entertained the crowd, which stood and intermittently sang softly along to his ballads throughout the relaxed and slightly melancholy show.

Accompanied by a five-piece band, a trio of back-up singers and two ballroom dancers, "Julio Iglesias in Concert" lasted roughly an hour and a half. Iglesias smoothly belted out his brief set list. To the crowd, he expressed his famously deep personal emotions throughout the performance by frequently closing his eyes and using his hands to further heighten the passion and pitch of his beautiful delivery of the lyrics.

Featured in the mostly down-tempo set was a selection of Spanish and English crowd favorites, such as "Natalie," "Mi Amor" and "Can't Help Falling In Love"
All of the songs were well-received, although it was "You Were Always on My Mind" which garnered the loudest cheers and participation from the middle-aged to older attendees, many of whom brought their teenage children along for the experience.

Sitting on a bar stool between songs, Iglesias took several moments to share anecdotes about his personal connection to Israel. Quite surprising to the audience was his avowal that his mother
was Jewish and that he himself was "Jewish from the waist up."

IN REGARD to the conflict in the region, Iglesias warmly said that he "understands your feelings and your fight," prompting a resounding round of applause from the audience. Iglesias also remarked on his past travels through the country and emphasized that Israel "is a part of my life" and that playing to an Israeli audience "is an honor."

Argentinean-born Israeli Nora Laybman of Modi'in was finally able to witness all of the romantic songs she had become so familiar with growing up. She believes that "Iglesias's romanticism is universal." And Laybman, who was lucky enough to acquire front row tickets, was in a good position to get an up-close impression of just how romantic Iglesias really is.

Also in the front row were plenty of other women who still hold adoration for the suave crooner. Throughout the show, female fans were presenting the Spaniard with bouquets of red roses and gifts. Iglesias's mentioning of past Israeli girlfriends from his first trip to Israel in 1974 only seemed to encourage the fans to sing a bit louder.

Indeed, Julio Iglesias has unmatched debonair credentials, and he lived up to his reputation as a man of passion. Despite his advice in between songs on the proper dosage of Viagra for sexual vitality and how he "makes love" with his songs on stage, it was actually more personally revealing to the attendees to hear of his Jewish mother's ancestral roots. Now his Israeli fans have another great reason to love him and his "body" of work - from the waist up as well.

Interview from Russia

Spanish romantic crooner Julio Iglesias is set to present Russians with his performance at the Olympiisky Sports Complex in Moscow on October 1.
Iglesias shares his thoughts with RIA Novosti correspondent Yevgeny Ionov on his upcoming concert in Moscow.

Mr. Iglesias you will be performing in Moscow on October 1, could you tell us about the forthcoming performance, whether you have prepared some surprises or some visual effects.

After so many years the only surprise is that I am alive. I’ve been playing in your country for the last 35 years and for me Russia is part of my life. I have a lot of professional relations with Russia and a lot of emotional relations. I love Russia and I love to play there. And now they have invited me to play at the Olimpiisky.

Mr. Iglesias what do you think about the Russian audience, do you like the Russian audience?

I love Russians! I love to play whenever they invite me. They invite me to play Russia and I played Russia for the last 28 maybe 30 years for 20 times.

Many famous foreign singers say after playing in Russia that the Russian women are the most beautiful in the world. Do you agree with this?

You know for me women do not have a nationality. I love people, I love human beings. I believe that the Russians in general are beautiful. But the Chinese are also beautiful and the French, and the Germans, and the Mexicans, and the Argentineans and the South Africans. The world is full of beautiful human beings and full of passion.

Going back to the concert, are you planning anything new in the program?

What I am doing in the next concerts technically are much [more] metal in there because fortunately for me I adapt to the new situation… Of course it’s a live concert. But we use more now the newer systems, the new secrets of computers, and the new sound, but everything is live.

You will be celebrating your birthday in September, how are you planning to celebrate it? Planning to give a concert or spend it with your family away from everyone?

Unfortunately, on the 23rd [of September] I don’t have a concert. I would like to have a concert, but I’d be playing many times. And this time I am in Europe and they invite me to do five concerts… in Nevada in Las Vegas in the Hilton [hotel] and I said “no” because I have Milan and I have Moscow. But I will celebrate the 23rd on the plane or wherever. I don’t care about that, I don’t have birthdays, you know. I had to close my life when I was 40 years old. That was the top of my life when I used to drink a bottle of champagne at 6 o’clock in the morning and at 10 o’clock I was singing, you know? Now if I drink a bottle of champagne at 6 in the morning, I cannot sing for a week.

The most important thing is to be back in the countries. When you get back to a country it means a lot of love. When I get back to Moscow I get back to a place that I know in my heart. I just land at the airport and you put me with my blind eyes and I can go to the center of Moscow, which is different everyday, by the same roads using the same access to the roads, so I feel like I’m at home. Like when I play… I’ve been playing for the world for the last 40 years and when they invite me to get back I have to be grateful to the people. And I am grateful to the Russian people… I played in various parts of Russia. I think the Russian country is physically so beautiful.

Is there any particular place in Moscow that you like especially?

I like the local area around the Kremlin, you know like Red Square, because it’s beautiful. But I like very much what Luzhkov did in the last 10-12 years with the city. He makes an incredible city, contemporary with the disappearance of that beautiful boastful old Moscow. I’ve been playing in Leningrad and St. Petersburg or whatever, and the city’s amazing, when you go to the old site, Peter the Great, you know the place is beautiful, it’s a beautiful country.

Your sons are also singers and what do you think and how do you feel about that?

It is very difficult for a tennis player to have kids who play tennis or a journalist who have kids as journalists. It is not so easy sometimes. And it is not easy for my kids. So they really have to get in front of the people and give a communication, excitement and talent. So I have a great admiration for Enrique and Julio because both of them are fighters. It’s amazing when your kids follow your footsteps. I love them. And they love the Russian girls by the way.

A couple of quick blitz questions. What is your favorite book?

I like Dostoevsky, War and Peace, but you asked me about my favorite book. My favorite one is Don Quixote by Miguel Cervantes. Because Quixote is me, you know? Quixote is a fantasy of the guy fighting with the Moors and he wins and he is very romantic.

What is your favorite movie?

The movie which really kept my brains is Casablanca.

What is your favorite dish, what do you like to eat?

Seafood. I really like seafood.

What would you tell the Russian audience before your concert in October?

Thank you! Thank you very much for so many years. Thank you very much for being so faithful. Thank you very much for making me feel so alive. Thank you very much for inviting me to be back in the country and to make me feel like a survivor. To come back to play in the same country is the biggest success an artist can have.

Julio Iglesias wins the love of Valencia
Source: ABC Daily, Spain

The Madrid singer ended yesterday, in the Plaza de Toros of Valencia, the Spanish stage of his international concert tour. It has been eight years since he sang in this city, and the public returned to show the artist their loyalty and their affection, giving him a great tribute.

Five Spanish concerts were sufficient - within his world tour - for Julio Iglesias to see that they love him in his native land, and to show the emotional electricity that flows in an immediate connection between the artist and his audience. The first one was in Almonte (Huelva), then Cap Roig (Gerona) - two concerts - then Castellón, and last night Valencia, the culmination and greatest indicator of loyalty to a fighter with a forty-year career behind him.

Last night, the Plaza de Toros of Valencia - a talismanic place in his career - saw more than two hours of Caribbean maelstrom and melodic peace, in a crescendo of sensuous musical arrangements, within a range of popular classics which Iglesias and the dancing audience shared in an "all together" accompanied by eight musicians, four female backup singers, and a pair of Tango dancers.

The enthusiastic and massive response was not long in arriving. Julio has an impeccable stage presence, there is not a hint of routine, each show is unique in itself, and now he shows that he is communicating more and better than ever.

Julio Iglesias fills El Rocio full of magic in a benefit concert

Julio Iglesias fills El Rocio full of magic in a benefit concert

More than 8,000 people come to see the singer some days before he will perform in Valencia on August 21st.

"This land of El Rocío is magic. The magic is in the air, in the place." And the magic flooded the Almontean village in the concert of a plethoric Julio Iglesias who opened his 'minitour' through Spain immersing himself in the crowds. Eight thousand excited spectators completely filled a Rocio Arena that seemed too small for the concert organized by the Brotherhood Matrix of Almonte to benefit an orphanage in the Congo. The singer gave up his fee ($425,000) because "each one of us has to help as much as we can those who need it the most," said the singer.
Julio Iglesias was happy throughout his performance of nearly 135 minutes. Dressed in his immaculate navy blue suit with vest, with an enviable figure, and more eager than ever, he recalled for the ecstasy of his staunch supporters his major successes, including "La vida sigue igual,' the song that catapulted him to fame in Benidorm 41 years ago, something not often included in his usual concerts. But Iglesias felt supported by the intimate arena, with a devoted audience, who enjoyed it as seldom before. 'Magic', as he said, had entered his body and the Madrid singer did not scrimp on anything.

With a perfect montage of light and sound, an extraordinary choral accompaniment, and an affinity for the stage, the smash hits that led him to sell nearly 300 million records were falling one by one: 'La carretera,' 'Natalie,' 'De niña a mujer,' 'Abrázame,' 'Manuela,' 'Hey'... and a long repertoire. He changed the refrains when he wanted, adapting them to El Rocio, Andalusia and Spain.

"Andalusia is a huge land, for this reason I live in it. Its strength, its influence is seen and felt in the Caribbean and this is true," he said. He recalled that his mother's ancestors were from Huelva, that El Rocío has always impressed as a social and religious phenomenon, and the people responded to his short speeches with thunderous ovations. The applause and the compliments of his fans turned into a real clamor, with thousands of people dancing to the sound of the Caribbean themes sung by Julio Iglesias, already nearing 1:30 in the morning, on a night that began a few minutes before 11, a night full of magic. It was a first class social event, and Julio Iglesias demonstrated that he is at the peak of his international career, the most honored of all living singers on earth .

It was not just one concert more. It was a 'show', a true spectacle. A performance prior to the dates in Girona (13th and 14th of August) and Castellon (18th) to finish in Valencia, on August 21st, at the Plaza de Toros. In this way, he will close his national tour before returning to the world tour that continues in September with several concerts in Israel, where all of the tickets have already been sold out for months.

El Rocío (Huelva, Spain) Concert Clip / News Story

efe Television in Spain reports on Julio's show in El Rocío (Huelva, Spain) earlier this week.

(Source: YouTube / efe TV)

Concert Review- Almonte, Spain

Completely full house for the concert of Julio Iglesias in El Rocío A full Rocío Arena - with a capacity for 8,000 people - surrendered last night to the singer Julio Iglesias, who chose the village of El Rocío, in Almonte (Huelva), to begin the tour that will take him to several Spanish cities before traveling to Israel in September.

People from different parts of Spain and from countries like neighboring Portugal did not want to miss the first chance to see the singer in a Spanish concert, which began around 10 pm and lasted past midnight. In the show, included in his tour "Julio Iglesias in concert," the artist sang many of the classics of his entire career such as "Manuela," "Quijote," "Me olvide de vivir," "Hey!" "Abrazame," "El amor," "Un canto a Galicia" and many more songs representative of his international career.

On this occasion, the special voice of this international artist joined in solidarity, as Julio Iglesias wanted to add to the charitable cause promoted by the Brotherhood Matrix of Rocío of Almonte and all of its subsidiaries to build an orphanage for sixty children in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, which will be named “Virgin of Rocío, Mother of Mercy.” Thus, to the revenue obtained from the sale of the tickets, has been added the fee of the artist, who on learning of the charitable cause, decided to perform selflessly, without charging, for his performance.

After performing in El Rocío, Julio Iglesias will be in Girona on August 13th and 14th, in Valencia on the 18th, and in Castellon de la Plana on the 21st, before the two concerts of the 8th and 10th of September in Israel, and the planned concerts in November in the Dominican Republic.
The performance of Julio Iglesias is part of the Virgin of Rocío of Almonte Festival promoted by the Brotherhood Matrix of Almonte to defray the costs of constructing the orphanage.

Julio in Turkey

Julio Iglesias performs in Bodrum, Çeşme

Internationally renowned Spanish singer of romantic ballads Julio Iglesias performed in concerts on Friday and Saturday in Bodrum and Çeşme. Both concerts attracted large audiences.

The Bodrum concert took place at Bodrum's ancient theater and was watched by many tourists and local residents. There was a food sale to support disabled students at the concert. Journalists were only allowed to take photos from a distance during the first song. The Spanish singer attended an after-party following the concert.

The following day Iglesias took to the stage at Çeşme's Open-air Theater. Justice and Development Party (AK Party) Deputy Chairwoman and İzmir deputy Nükhet Hotar Göksel and Çeşme Mayor Faik Tütüncüoğlu were in the audience.

Iglesias, who performed four concerts in Turkey last year, will appear on stage in Antalya tomorrow for his fourth concert in Turkey this year.
