Julio named "Madrid's Favorite Son"
Madrid, Feb 20 (EFE).- Spanish crooner Julio Iglesias on Friday was
named a "Favorite Son of Madrid" in honor of his "brilliant,
internationally recognized, meritorious career" and for being a
"universal Spaniard" born in the Spanish capital.
Madrid Mayor Ana Botella's nomination of the singer did not receive unanimous support from the City Council, unlike the last Spaniard to receive the title, opera star Placido Domingo, in 2012.
But the delegate of Arts, Sport and Tourism, Pedro Corral, said there is no doubting the talent on which Iglesias achieved his popular following or his willingness in public to boost the city in which he was born on Sep. 23, 1943.
A date for Iglesias to receive the title has not been announced, but a ceremony is expected to take place sometime in March or April, officials told Efe.
The Favorite Son of Madrid title is awarded by the mayor to people born in Madrid for their outstanding qualities or merit, and their services in improving and honoring the city.
Throughout his career, Julio Iglesias has shared the stage with celebrities such as Barbara Streisand, Frank Sinatra, Stevie Wonder, Diana Ross, Placido Domingo, Charles Aznavour and Sting, among others.
Since debuting as a performer at age 24, Iglesias has sold more than 300 million records, recorded 79 albums during his career, and performed at 5,000 concerts attracting more than 60 million people worldwide.

Julio Iglesias remembers Oscar de la Renta
The death of the illustrious designer Oscar de la Renta has touched the hearts of his greatest fans around the world. His longtime friend and singer Julio Iglesias paid tribute to the late 82-year-old designer who died Monday night after a long battle with cancer.
“Oscar, my soulmate. Now who’s going to tell me about the nice things in life, who will give me advice?” Iglesias wrote on Twitter with a photo of the two.
The duo have been friends for many years, both having neighboring homes in the beach resort area of Punta Cana, Dominican Republic.
Iglesias, 71, took part in a celebration to honor De La Renta with the Medal of Excellence this past May in New York. At the time, De la Renta called the singer “like a brother.” “I imagine you’ve taken with you the sea of Punta Cana, the sea of memories, the sea of joy, the sea of magic, the sea that you invented,” Iglesias continued in his tribute. “There will not a day in my life that the sea you brought to me will not return a smile for you. I love you forever.”
De la Renta died in his home in Connecticut surrounded by family, friend and “more than a few dogs,” according to a handwritten statement signed by his stepdaughter Eliza Reed Bolen and her husband, Alex Bolen. "While our hearts are broken by the idea of life without Oscar, he is still very much with us.
Oscar's hard work, his intelligence and his love of life are at the heart of our company," the statement said. "All that we have done, and all that we will do, is informed by his values and his spirit."
Monday night also marked the start of Fashion Week in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. In a pre-planned honor, the Hotel Santo Domingo inaugurated a room named after De la Renta.
