Julio in the Wall Street Journal

BY CHRISTINA S.N. LEWIS
The Wall Street Journal

Julio Iglesias couldn't sell his Indian Creek house.
Having failed to sell his Miami-area house for $25 million, Julio Iglesias razed it last month and plans to rebuild.

''We went down, down, down [in price] and then I thought, you know, this is too cheap,'' says the 64-year-old singer, speaking from his home in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic. He had cut the asking price for the 10,350-square-foot house well below the original $32 million he was seeking when he listed it three years ago.

Iglesias says he tore the house down because it didn't meet his family's needs. ''The house was built for a couple [and] suddenly I had five kids,'' he adds. As a result, he was spending relatively little time at the home, his only U.S. residence. (The singer also owns a house in southern Spain.) Because he considered the four-acre property ''great,'' he plans to build a Spanish-style hacienda on it.

Iglesias, who performs about 150 concerts a year, bought the Indian Creek property in 1978 for about $650,000 and renovated the house. With about 400 feet of Intracoastal frontage, the Iglesias property includes a pool. Coldwell Banker's Jill Eber and Jill Hertzberg had the listing.

Escalating land prices have led to a boom in multimillion-dollar teardowns. ''At these prices the value is all in the land,'' says East Hampton, N.Y., broker Diane Saatchi, of Corcoran Group, who says she sold a $28 million teardown property in the Hamptons.

Willie Nelson Compares Julio Iglesias to Biodiesel Fuel

On the Road Again with Willie
By Asher Price Monday, August 13, 2007, 01:50 PM

.."He compares, oddly enough, learning about the history of biodiesel to first hearing Julio Iglesias on the radio. After hearing Iglesias, “I wanted to record with him and introduce him to the world,” he writes. “As it turns out, he had already been introduced to the world, and the world had been buying millions of his records for years.”
Then he launches into a history of biodiesel and how it had been around long before he started promoting it."

Julio Iglesias and his rose

Julio Iglesias and his namesake Rose in Paris, 2007

More Rose Information

Julio Iglesias presents his rose in Paris
June 28, 2007

During his 2007 world tour, Julio Iglesias will make a stop in Paris for two concerts at the famous Olympia by the end of June and he kindly accepted to christen the rose dedicated to him by Meilland.
The unique color, light cream strongly striped with red and the fragrance of a rare intensity described by the Perfumers in Grasse as "orange and grapefruit with a touch of Madagascar Verbena" should make this rose a real hit.
No doubt this new rose will charm all the enthusiasts just like the voice of the most successful latin singer in music history.

"Julio Iglesias" The Rose

"JULIO IGLESIAS ... meet Julio Iglesias." The iconic Latin crooner Julio Iglesias was formally introduced to his new namesake rose a month or so ago at the Ritz Hotel in Paris while he - the singer, not the rose - was on his world tour. I've been told the meeting was a big hit.

The striking Julio rose is creating its own following here on the West Coast, too; rose testers have found it to do especially well in warm gardens. Look for it in nurseries this spring. Its fragrance is described by master perfumers in Grasse, France, as "orange and grapefruit with a touch of Madagascar verbena," and Meilland Star Roses, the company that's introducing it, touts it as a "bold, spicy floribunda" with a bloom that's "light cream strongly striped with red."
I'd say it smells citrusy and looks more like a man's elegant shirt collar that's been quickly smeared with his paramour's raspberry-colored lipstick glimpsed under the streetlights that pierce the darkness of their fast-moving limousine. OK, maybe that's just the Julio effect. Where was I? Oh, yes. The Julio rose.
I've never been fond of striped roses, even when really wonderful Marin rose growers entered them into the monthly shows at the Marin Rose Society meetings. They looked contrived and gaudy and didn't seem to fit in with the more graceful roses I favored. In fact, they stood out. I just didn't take striped roses seriously at all.
So I wasn't that enthused when Julio the rose arrived in a shipment of other Star roses sent to me this winter for testing. I was looking forward to the Apricot Candy, a tall, elegant rose with a beautiful center and the cheerful Full Moon Rising. Classic Woman also promised to be to a nice choice to watch.
But a striped rose? That just wasn't on my must-have list. This one has changed my mind, though. I love the Julio Iglesias rose for his drama and exuberance. In bloom, he seems to have a joyful and zestful spirit that contrasts, but doesn't argue, with the more serious roses - the old gardens and hybrid teas - that surround him. He's sort of like a boyish charmer who's only playfully messing with their diva-ness.
While the real Iglesias has been performing all over the world, his namesake rose has been faithfully belting out the blooms here in my garden and keeping all the female roses around him very entertained - although they probably would never admit it.

Welcome!

Welcome to the new home of "PASSION: Julio Iglesias" at http://passionjulio.blogspot.com/

Over the past several years, "PASSION: Julio Iglesias" was hosted on a website that took a long time to update and difficult to maintain. The move to http://passionjulio.blogspot.com/ was a quick and easy one. It will allow me to update it in a matter of seconds, as well as keep you updated on all things Julio in a much quicker format!

While it may seem difficult at first versus the old web page- the new web page will be very simple and practical. I have done away with areas of the web page that were rarely used and I am keeping everything very simple.

The new "PASSION: Julio Iglesias" will focus on Tour Dates, News, Concert Reviews, and Information pertaining to Julio Iglesias the world's greatest singer!

In case you are wondering, I am locked out of the old web page. I cannot get in to delete the account or make any changes. This helped make the transaction to the new web page much easier.

Thank You for your support over the years.

Julio's Jet Makes History

GULFSTREAM G550 ESTABLISHES CITY-PAIR RECORD BETWEEN HONOLULU AND PUNTA CANA, DOMINICAN REPUBLIC

Julio Iglesias Onboard Record-Setting Flight

SAVANNAH , Ga. , Feb. 12, 2007 – An ultra-long-range Gulfstream G550 established a city-pair speed record flying from Honolulu , Hawaii , to Punta Cana , Dominican Republic , in just over 10 hours. Onboard the Gulfstream demonstration aircraft was one of the most successful artists in the history of music, Julio Iglesias, who is awaiting delivery of two Gulfstream aircraft – a G550 and a long-range G450.
“In the 20 years I’ve owned Gulfstream jets, I have always been able to count on the reliability of the airplane and the support of Gulfstream’s service centers to meet my busy schedule. Gulfstream jets offer the cutting edge in technology and unparalleled performance,” Iglesias said. “For me, the word ‘Gulfstream’ stands for both a superb product and an outstanding company. It is an honor to be a member of the Gulfstream family and a part of this recent record-setting flight.”
The G550 took off from Honolulu International Airport at 8:17 p.m. on Jan. 12. Piloted by Larry S. Mueller, Gulfstream senior international captain; David E. Smith, Gulfstream international captain; and Jack Mullican, international captain, the G550 flew east 5,106 nautical miles at an average cruise speed of 0.85 Mach, landing at Punta Cana International Airport the next day at 2:18 p.m. Flight attendant Karin O’Kelly provided in-flight cabin service to Mr. Iglesias and his guests.
Gulfstream has submitted applications to the National Aeronautic Association to confirm this new city-pair record.
One of the world’s top recording artists, Julio Iglesias has sold more than 250 million records in different languages, released 77 records and performed more than 5,000 concerts during his career.
