MONTEVIDEO – Julio Iglesias begins Wednesday in the Uruguayan seaside resort of Punta del Este his “Starry Night” tour that throughout 2010 will take him around the world, including to Asia, where he has not performed for more than five years.

The Spanish artist begins his tour with three concerts at the 1,300-seat auditorium of the Hotel Conrad in Punta del Este. Tickets are priced at $150, $200 and $350.

The latter, the so-called VIP tickets, give the singer’s admirers the chance to have a cocktail with him after the show.Although the performance is not sold out, one of the promoters told Efe that dozens of women of all ages have already snapped up their tickets, so the artist could find himself singing to an audience “of several generations: granddaughters, daughters, moms and grandmothers.”

Iglesias, who visited Punta del Este last year, landed Tuesday at the seaside resort’s airport in a private jet accompanied by a nephew. The “Starry Night” tour takes its name from the 1990 album of the same name, and performances will basically keep the same format in all countries, though content and language could vary from country to country, the organizers said.

After the Uruguay concerts, the tour will segue to neighboring Argentina before moving on to other South American capitals like Santiago and Lima. Later it will head for the Malayan capital of Kuala Lumpur on April 1, and will continue on to Japan afterwards.

Since launching his musical career four decades ago, Iglesias has recorded 79 discs, of which he has sold 300 million copies, and has given more than 5,000 concerts in 600 cities around the world before 60 million fans. He is also an artist who has recorded his songs in nearly a score of languages including Mandarin, Tagalog and Bahasa-Indonesian. EFE
