Without them,these 42 years would have not been possible." – Julio IglesiasWHEN he sings, Julio Iglesias gives it his all – closing his eyes and crooning as though the words are coming from his very soul.
Iglesias, 66, is one of the world’s most popular recording artistes, having sold more than 300 million albums in 14 languages. For over four decades, he has captivated audiences with his beautiful love songs whether sung in Spanish, English or Portuguese.
The veteran singer will be making a stop in Kuala Lumpur on his 2010 world tour. In an email interview, Iglesias seems just as happy to come perform here as we are to have him.
Asked what is his secret for enduring as an artiste for so long, he replies: "Being in love with music, hard work, discipline and a good communication with the audience."
He is also humbled by the fact that he is one of the top 10 best-selling artistes of all time. "It’s an honour and a big responsibility at the same time. I am very grateful to all the people around the world who have come to see me perform and bought my albums. Without them, these 42 years would have not been possible."
Even his many Spanish songs have managed to captivate millions who don’t understand the language. "I have the chance to perform many of my songs in Spanish, a language spoken by more than 400 million people in the world, and I also sing in many other languages, including Asian ones.
"I think it is important to reach the audience by means of their mother tongue, but understanding the lyrics of a song is not compulsory to reach people’s hearts. Music is a universal language itself."
How different would this coming concert be from his previous performances here?
"Yes, I’ve performed in Malaysia several times. The last time was in 2003. I have beautiful memories related to your country and am looking forward to coming back.
"The show in Kuala Lumpur on April 1 will be focused on the most important songs of my career – those which gave me the joy to see three generations together. There is no greater recompense for an artiste."
Many of those hit songs such as To All the Girls I’ve Loved Before, My Love, El Amor, Manuela and Soy are still enjoyed today.
"Because they talk about those little details which make the difference in life and about the engine of the universe, love, in a simple and direct way," Iglesias explains about the songs’ popularity.
When asked if he is as romantic as his music, he says: "Well, I would tend to say yes, but you should better ask my wife, Miranda."
Iglesias declares he doesn’t do anything special to keep his voice in good shape. "Just lots of rehearsals and many hours of recording, in the studio. That is the best recipe."
Asked who he listens to and admires the most, he says: "I enjoy very much listening to great voices who are part of the history of music, like [Frank] Sinatra and Elvis [Presley], but also to the young generation, like my son, Enrique. It is great to see new talents rising because it means evolution and diversity."
His older sons, Julio Jr and Enrique (with former wife Isabel Preysler), have followed in his footsteps as singers. He also have four young children (two sons and twin girls) with current wife and former Dutch model Miranda Rijnsburger and an older daughter with Preysler.
"My kids love music. Michael and Rodrigo even set up a band, with their cousins on Christmas and invited me to perform for them. I don’t know if they will follow in my footsteps; it will be their decision, when the moment comes."
Iglesias had once said that he enjoys doing the tango and even came out with an album of sensual love songs called Tango (1996).
"The tango is a constant feature in my life. I adore it and it is always a part of my shows. Tango is synonym to love and passion, so it represents a universal language.
"I am sure the Malaysian audience will enjoy the tangos we’ll perform and which will be illustrated by a pair of Argentinean dancers."
To his fans in Malaysia, he says: "I send them a huge hug and I can’t wait to see them again in Kuala Lumpur on April 1. I am sure we’ll have a great evening together. A big, big kiss, Malaysia! See you soon."

He’s now married to a model with whom he has five children.
On a lighter note, when asked what his idea of romance is and if he has a special way of showing his being romantic, Julio said, “There are millions and trillions of ways of expressing romance. No,” he joked again, “I don’t have any special technique,” adding, “Women are superior to men because they have nine months to give life to children and those nine months are the greatest experience of women.”
In tonight’s Big Dome concert, Julio will sing his heart out for the Ondoy victims. He will dedicate a Filipino song to the audience, the immortal Dahil Sa’yo.

The night mimics the demeanor of its star. Serene, warm, seductive, is this Latin singer par excellence in this tour celebrating his four decades onstage.
The excellent band signals the entrance of the star, and the large audience greets Julio Iglesias with passion but without euphoria. That is the way this memorable evening will continue: natural, simple and straight to the heart.
Iglesias, a Don Juan in the traditional sense, gives and receives willingly. He sings for nearly two hours in Buenos Aires, before a stadium that sings along – but does not shout – his songs. He starts with "Nathalie," one of his classics, and then swings into "La gota fría." A few people start dancing, imitating the sinuous dance of one of the backup singers. The rest enjoy it in silence, with the same pleasure that the Spaniard has said he felt arriving at this sole presentation in Buenos Aires.
THE CLASSICS
Iglesias speaks infrequently. He says that "Argentina is a beautiful land with a privileged people" and that "everyone here is beautiful".
Immediately he evokes the memory of the dancer Osvaldo Zotto, recently deceased, who accompanied him for years in tours throughout the world. To him he dedicates the tango "A media luz" in a quiet version, almost bashful, so emotional that it cannot be critiqued.
The rest of the program consists of the greatest hits of his career, which have led him to sell nearly three hundred million records. He continues with "Échame a mi la culpa," "De niña a mujer," "Manuela," "El amor," "Hey," "La carretera." Restless, his right hand draws figures in the air, stops at his stomach, caresses it. He intersperses songs in English ("Crazy," "Always On My Mind,") in French, in Italian. In the Galician language he also sings a song honoring his ancestors: "Un canto a Galicia".
A brief account of his recent trip to Hailti leaves the audience – and himself – raw. He recovers with "La cumparsita," danced proudly by our compatriots Soledad Fernández and Hernán Gelosi.
Time seems to stop when Iglesias heralds the farewell with "Soy un truhán, soy un señor." Then yes, the people shout their love unconditionally. The Spaniard smiles, raises his hands clasped as if in prayer, and leaves with "Me va, me va." The magic is still intact.

He will be on tour until the end of the year.
He kicks off his tour of this region with a concert in Manila on March 20, followed by three performances in Australia — Sydney, Hunter Valley and Melbourne — between March 26 and 29.
His next stop is Kuala Lumpur on April 1 followed by Tokyo, Osaka and Nagoya between April 5 and 12.
Iglesias will wrap up his tour of Asia with a concert in Seoul on April 17.
“The tour provides me the opportunity to perform again in Malaysia, the Philippines, Korea and Japan,” he said in an e-mail interview with Life & Times recently.
Billed “2010 Starry Night World Tour”, it is a continuation of his 2008-2009 tour.
To embark on a world tour, it is imperative that an artiste be in good shape.
“I am 66, but I feel like 30.
Touring is not tiring at all.
In fact, it gives me more energy and keeps me alive.”
Although he has performed several times in Malaysia — in 1990, 1994, 1997 and 2003 — Iglesias is, nevertheless, excited to return to KL.
The 90-minute concert will cover some of his greatest hits including To All The Girls I’ve Loved Before, All Of You and Crazy.
He will be backed by seven musicians and accompanied by five dancers, including a tango pair.
“2010 Starry Night World Tour” in Kuala Lumpur is brought by PR Worldwide Sdn Bhd and will take place at the Plenary Hall of the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre.
Showtime begins at 8.30pm.
“I prefer to focus on the quality of music and the atmosphere rather than on special effects,” he said, when asked whether there would be any special technology or stage sets for the concert.
