Julio honored in Spain

Julio Iglesias received yesterday, at the Cervantes Institute in Madrid, two historic awards: the Latin artist who has sold more albums in history (300 million) and the artist who has sold more albums in Spain (23 million).

Both awards were given to him by Rafa Nadal in a very emotional ceremony.

Julio Iglesias: "Undoubtedly, this is the most important day of my career. It is the one that moves me, most deeply moves me. I am also very moved that my father and my mother are not here, as they are the very direct cause of this effort and of the passion that they gave me for life".

Rafa's words about Julio were very emotional: "Julio can win the hearts of everyone in the world. I can attest to that, because, wherever I go, whether dining in Japan or in the USA, at some point one of his songs is playing. I admire him not only for his music, but also for his desire to excel, because even after a lifetime of achievements, he keeps going forward. Julio is the person who called me in my most difficult moments, and he took a plane to sing at the presentation of my Foundation. It is an honor and also a great decision by my country to honor him today".

Julio said he was "grateful to the critics, to friends and to the people who, anywhere in the world, have bothered to go to a store or to a concert. "And he added: "Tomorrow I will believe it has all been a dream."

South African Tour: Postponed

Event organiser Big Concerts has announced that Spanish crooner Julio Iglesias will not be performing in South Africa after all. Enrique’s dad, who according to Sony Music Entertainment is one of the top 30 bestselling musicians in history, was scheduled to perform at the Big Top Arena at Carnival City, Jo’burg, on November 5 and 6, before moving on to Cape Town’s GrandWest Casino on November 8.

The concerts have been “postponed until further notice”, apparently because Iglesias recently contracted “a serious ear infection”, from which the crooner is still recovering. Both Iglesias and Big Concerts have apologised to fans for any inconvenience and a new tour schedule is being discussed for performances next year.

Having garnered international fame from his singing career, Iglesias’s beginnings are often forgotten. Once a promising goal keeper for one of Real Madrid’s soccer teams before suffering a spinal-compression injury in a car accident, he began practicing the guitar to improve his fine motor dexterity.

Since the start of the singer’s illustrious musical career in 1986, when he won the Benidorm International Song contest in Spain with his entry, “La vida sigue igual”, Iglesias has released more than 80 albums in numerous languages and is the only musician ever to be awarded the Diamond Disc by the Guinness Book of World Records for selling more records in more languages than any other musical artist in history.

Fans of the “To All The Girls I’ve Loved Before” singer should hold on to their tickets until new dates have been announced, though according to a press release from PR company Penny Stein Promotions, all ticket holders for Iglesias’s shows are entitled to an immediate, full refund from Computicket outlets.

Julio Iglesias: I “Was a Bad Singer” when I Started Out

SAO PAULO – Spanish singer Julio Iglesias, who is on an eight-concert tour of Brazil, said in an interview that he “was a bad singer” when he recorded his first songs and had decided to re-record them for the “Volume I” album.

“You only get better with time and I’ll be even better in 10 years,” Iglesias told the Folha de Sao Paulo newspaper.

The 68-year-old singer’s album will feature songs like “Hey,” “Me Olvide de Vivir” and “Manuela,” as well as some versions sung in Portuguese.

The album is hitting the market amid an economic downturn that is affecting music sales.

“There is a crisis, but music and artists are always going to exist. The rest can be done,” Iglesias said.

After the United States, Brazil is the country where Iglesias has appeared the most.

His current tour includes a stop in Olinda, a city in the northeastern state of Pernambuco, “which is the poorest, but it gets rid of its ills with song,” Iglesias said.

The Spanish singer, who has sold more than 300 albums in different languages, is starting his Brazil tour with concerts Saturday and Sunday at Sao Paulo’s HSBC Theater.

He will perform on Tuesday in Olinda, on Thursday in Brasilia and on Oct. 15 in Curitiba.

Iglesias will wrap up his tour with performances in Rio de Janeiro on Oct. 17, Porto Alegre on Oct. 20 and Florianopolis on Oct. 22.
